Ph.D. Project
Topic: The use of background knowledge, existing in hypertext, in the context
of learning processes
Supervisors: Prof. Dr. G. Strube (Freiburg)
Start / End of the Ph.D. project: April 1999 - June 2001
Summary
The topic of this Ph.D. project is the use of new media in the context
of knowledge acquisition and knowledge exchange. The materials for the lecture
"introduction to cognitive science" will be implemented in a system like ELM-Art
developed by Gerd Weber. ELM-ART is an intelligent tutoring system (ITS) that
collects data of the learners' individual learning history and supports them during
the course of the learning process. The "Encyclopedia of Cognitive Science", published
by Gerhard Strube, should be used as background knowledge. To take new media into
account, an electronic version of this encyclopedia is currently developed. In
addition to the electronic version of the encyclopedia, it will be necessary to
record a trace that must be adapted to the one of ELM-ART. This protocol stores
variables like the following ones: "Which term has been looked up?", "How long
was the reading time of the entry?", "Which other terms have been looked up using
the links given in the entry?". Subjects for empirical studies within this project
will be members of the Ph. D. project. Their task will be to work through the
lecture using the electronic version of the encyclopedia. In addition to the field
study, I will also carry out experiments in a laboratory setting.
