Topic: Improving Intercultural Competence: a Training Program for Exchange Students from Germany and China
Supervisors: Prof. Dr. Hans Spada (Freiburg)
Start of the Ph.D. project: 01/2007
Summary
One of the major challenges facing the German and Chinese exchange students in the respective foreign countries is to overcome cultural obstacles resulting from inappropriate intercultural communications. Aiming at increasing intercultural competence of the exchange students to facilitate successful studies, this project will research cultural differences in cognition, emotion and communication. Especially we will refer to problems that German students in China as well as Chinese students in Germany are facing.
In this project, the psychological factors affecting the intercultural communications between German and Chinese students will be examined. Based on a comprehensive literature analysis, combined with findings from interviews with German and Chinese exchange students about their personal experiences, we will set up a training program helping the students developing intercultural competence and mastering their studies in the foreign country. The effectiveness of the training will be empirically evaluated.
