Ph.D. Project

Topic: Supporting adaptation of explanations in net-based-communication

Supervisor: Prof. Dr. Rainer Bromme (Münster), Prof. Dr. Hans Spada (Freiburg)

Start of the Ph.D. project: 11 / 2005

Summary

My Ph.D project addresses ways of supporting expert's in their written communication with laypersons. Therefore, I test and refine a computerized tool that has been developed within the DFG project "Recipient design in net-based written communication among experts and novices" (Bromme/Jucks). The Concept Revision Tool (CRT) supports a writer's reflection about her/his written text and thereby fosters the revision process. Working with the CRT includes three main phases: (1) writing a first draft, (2) metacognitive reflection of used concepts, and (3) revision of the text. Stage 2 is in the centre of attention. Here, the CRT analyzes written texts by spotting out central terms (based on a database which is set up a prior by the researcher) and reflects them to the writer by asking pointed questions about these concepts. By selecting the dimensions of reflection about concepts (for example reflection about the concepts' comprehensibility for a certain audience or about their importance for conveying a certain message), the CRT can be used to study those variables which might impact on text revision.
